Certified Veterinary Technician

Born and raised in Palmetto.  Paula grew up in a 4-H family where they raised all kinds of animals from chickens, rabbits, goats, pigs, cows, horses, dogs and cats. She has always had a passion for taking care of animals.   From a young age she would sneak stray animals into her home and take care of them.  The house has never been empty of animals.  She raised three kids,  daughter Amanda, and two boys, in 4-H also where they continued the passion of raising farm animals for show.

Paula went back to school at an older age in life at the encouragement of her niece Janna to obtain a degree as a Certified Veterinary Technician.  She graduated from St. Pete College in 2008 Magna Cum Laude, obtained a degree as a Certified Veterinary Technician.  After Janna’s death in 2007 she is very involved  in maintaining the Janna Shuman Memorial Scholarship a scholarship set up in her memory for Veterinary Technicians attending the program at St. Pete College.  Money is raised by holding bi-annual yard sales at the clinic on her birthday in September and Paula's birthday in April.  Click here to view. Janna's Facebook Scholarship page

She currently has seven dogs, two cats, three chickens, two fish and one rescued Nanday Conure that was shot with a BB gun.  She enjoys helping the behaviorally challenged pets and teaching them to love again.  Ever since the rescue of a Terrier Mix named Penny whose owner had died and the family couldn’t get near her without her biting them.  With her aggression issues as well as her elderly aging, heartworm disease and mammary tumors she was deemed unfit to be rehabilitated and was set to be euthanized.  Paula took passion on this dog and knew that there was something that she was missing.  After a long heart to heart talk with her Paula agreed to take her home for the weekend to work with her.  It was apparent that she had love inside her and wanted to let it out.  She regained her trust in humanity and she became Paula's personal owned pet that traveled with her daily to work and back.  She learned to trust again and never growled or tried to bite again.  Paula carries her collar with her in her truck to remind her that she should never judge a dog by their teeth but to listen to their heart with her own heart.
